Unlocking Potential: 4 Ways Gentle Spaces Empower Women in Tech

Introduction

The world of technology is often described as a frontier, a realm of innovation akin to the Wild West. It's a place where groundbreaking ideas are brought to life, transforming the way we live and work. While the excitement of technological innovation is undeniable, it comes at a cost.

For many women in tech, this cost includes the emotional toll of navigating a landscape where they are frequently the first or only woman in the room. The gender disparities and underlying structures of violence and misogyny that persist in the tech industry have far-reaching consequences.

According to a 2022 Deloitte study, only 25.3% of leadership roles in 20 large tech companies are filled by women. To address this imbalance and empower women in tech, we must consider the importance of creating gentle spaces.

Unraveling Past Experiences

One of the essential steps in reclaiming power as a woman in tech is the gentle untangling or sense-making of past experiences. Many women have encountered bias, discrimination, and hostility, and these experiences can leave deep emotional wounds.

To move forward, it's crucial to reflect on these experiences, acknowledge their impact, and process the emotions they evoke. Gentle spaces provide the supportive environment necessary for this healing journey.

Many women in tech work with a therapist to address personal trauma, which is appropriate. However, there is something validating and healing when metabolizing work experiences with professional peers and colleagues.

Building Self-Trust and Confidence

Another critical aspect of empowering women in tech is fostering self-trust and confidence. The tech industry can be intimidating and competitive, and women often face imposter syndrome and self-doubt. Gentle spaces offer a safe haven where women can build self-esteem, explore their capabilities, and develop the confidence needed to excel in their careers.

The Role of Women-Only or Women-Primary Spaces

Women-only or women-primary spaces play a pivotal role in this process of empowerment. These spaces offer a sense of community and belonging that is often lacking in male-dominated tech environments. Here are some of the benefits of such spaces:

  1. Emotional Support: Women-primary spaces provide a platform for sharing experiences and emotions without judgment. This emotional support is essential for healing and growth.

  2. Skill Development: These spaces can offer workshops, mentorship programs, and resources tailored to the needs and aspirations of women in tech, helping them acquire valuable skills and knowledge.

  3. Networking Opportunities: Building a professional network is crucial for career advancement. Women-primary spaces facilitate networking among like-minded individuals who can offer guidance and opportunities.

  4. Confidence Building: By fostering an environment where women feel valued and respected, these spaces empower women to take on leadership roles and pursue their goals with confidence.

Success Stories in Women-Primary Spaces

One example of the power of women-primary spaces is my online program Beyond Burnout. When a company hires me to guide employees through this 12-week program, they choose whether to make the invitation all gender, female only, female and non-binary, or some other delineation. I have not yet led a men-only cohort but that would be possible, too. Results are positive for all participants.

When I create a round for individuals rather than a company, enrollment is usually exclusively women. Participants in these programs consistently report transformative experiences. They find the strength to change toxic workplace dynamics, land their dream jobs, secure raises and promotions, and gain clarity about their life goals. Most importantly, they begin to experience more joy, fulfillment, and healthier relationships.

The Alchemy of Transformation

A suitable metaphor for the journey within women-primary spaces is alchemy. As participants undergo personal transformation and growth, the container provided by these spaces remains steadfast and supportive. It's a space where women can evolve, much like elements changing within a melting pot, while retaining their essential essence.

Conclusion

In the ever-evolving tech industry, it's vital to create gentle spaces where women can heal, learn, grow, and thrive. The quality of these spaces matters immensely and significantly influences what's possible in terms of personal transformation and success. By investing in women-primary spaces and empowering women in tech, we can work towards a more inclusive and equitable industry that benefits everyone. As women regain their power, they not only contribute to the tech world's innovation but also inspire future generations of female leaders to follow in their footsteps.
