Being with someone while they have a psychotic break can be terrifying.
Have you ever experienced this?
I thought I knew the rules of the game, this being human around and with other humans.
I thought there was a level of reality at which we all, more or less, meet.
I was wrong.
This happened to me recently. Suddenly the playing field was different than I thought. It was as though the rule of gravity was suddenly broken.
In that moment, it felt like a nightmare that none of us could wake up from. As three of us tried to make contact with our friend during her episode, she just got farther and farther away.
It seems like mental illness is increasing by terrifying amounts.
People are suffering depression, mental imbalances, opioid overdose… It’s like there’s a pandemic of despair.
What is happening in our world?
Some would say that there are just a lot of sick people.
I would propose that it’s our society and systems that are sick.
It is almost impossible to experience vibrant well being in the midst of a growing toxic load and diminishing nutrition.
I mean both toxic load and nutrition on multiples levels.
There is the *physical*, where toxicity is increasingly present in our air, water, and food. And nutrients are diminishing out from the food affordably available to us.
And then there is the *psychic*. Where the cognitive dissonance of our current news, and the isolation most people are suffering is almost insurmountable.
Humans are not meant to live alone in insular habitation cells. They are meant to connect regularly in community and in feeling states with other humans.
That’s why concerts and games are popular, it’s an opportunity to exist in the waves of shared feeling states.
But humans also need to be seen and cared for in communities.
The value of a human life can not be measured in dollars, yet that is how so many look at groups or companies… Human Resources.
As we continue on this path, we will continue mounting casualties; in deaths, psychotic episodes, or chemical dependence.
We’ll continue a downward spiral into pandemic despair.
Unless we do something different. Can we flip the paradigm on it’s head, acknowledge to ourselves and each other that we have gotten it horribly wrong, and redefine the game to call *Resourcing the Humans* winning?
What if we measure success by well being and genuine happiness?
There are tools and best practices available for creating societies and systems that are regenerative in nature. Thankfully this is mostly open source.
But first people need to wake up from their numb stasis enough to get mad. And care enough to identify and begin building the alternative communities and systems.
I’m sad and scared for my friend, and furious and deeply concerned about the state of the world.
My friend is currently in a stabilization unit, getting the help she needs to begin her path back to wholeness.
Let’s make it so for our communities and world as well.
